Resident Evil 2 is Getting Another Remake—But There’s a Catch!

The Raccoon City outbreak is spreading to a whole new platform. During the latest Capcom Spotlight, the gaming giant dropped a bombshell for survival horror fans: Resident Evil 2: Arcade is officially in development.

While fans are always hungry for more RE2 content, this isn’t exactly the “Remake of the Remake” you might have expected. Here is everything you need to know about Leon and Claire’s next high-octane adventure.

Back to Raccoon City: An On-Rails Experience

Developed in collaboration with Bandai Namco, Resident Evil 2: Arcade takes the stunning visuals of the 2019 RE2 Remake and transforms them into an intense on-rails light-gun shooter.

Instead of careful inventory management and solving puzzles, this version is all about reflexes. Players will step back into the boots of Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield, but this time, the camera moves for you as you blast through hordes of zombies, Lickers, and the relentless Mr. X.

Immersive Tech: Floor Jets and Vibrations

Capcom isn’t just porting the game to a cabinet; they are leaning into the “4D” arcade experience. The new cabinets are reportedly equipped with:

  • Floor Vibration Technology: Feel the heavy thuds of Mr. X’s footsteps as he stalks you.
  • Floor Jets: Experience blasts of air to simulate the environments or the wind-up of a monster’s attack.
  • Co-op Action: Just like the classic Darkside Chronicles on the Wii, you can team up with a friend for couch (or cabinet) co-op.

A Nod to Resident Evil History

Long-time fans will remember that this isn’t Capcom’s first foray into the light-gun genre. Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles and The Darkside Chronicles were cult hits on the Nintendo Wii.

However, while those games used stylized graphics or assets from the original 1998 title, Resident Evil 2: Arcade is built directly on the RE Engine assets from the 2019 masterpiece. This means the gore, the lighting, and the character models will look better than ever.

When Can You Play It?

Currently, the game is set for location testing in Japan throughout March 2026. As of now, there is no official word on a Western release or a home console port.

However, given the popularity of the franchise and Capcom’s history of porting arcade titles (and their recent “Generation Pack” bundles), there is a glimmer of hope that we might eventually see this hit PS5, Xbox Series X/S, or PC.

The Future of Resident Evil

The Capcom Spotlight was a bit of a mixed bag for horror fans. While the arcade reveal was exciting, many were hoping for news on the rumored Resident Evil 9 or the Code: Veronica remake.

According to recent leaks, we might have to wait until 2027 for the next “major” remake, but with the 30th Anniversary of the franchise coming up on March 22, Capcom might still have a few jump-scares left up its sleeve.
